Tommy Chong is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, and also cannabis rights activist. He rose to prominence after appearing in the comedy movie Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie in 1980.

Furthermore, he has also starred in a couple of popular movies such as Up in Smoke, Zootopia, Pauly Shore Is Dead, Half Baked, and much more.

Tommy Chong was born on May 24, 1938, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Talking about his nationality, he is Canadian-American and his ethnicity is mixed (Chinese, Scottish, Irish).

He is the son of waitress Lorna Jean and truck driver Stanley Chong. As a child, his childhood was so hard as his family was in poverty.

Moving towards his education, he dropped out of Crescent Heights High School at the age of 16. After that, he began to play guitar to make money.

Tommy Chong began his career in music when he played guitar for a Calgary soul group named The Shades. Later, their debut album ‘Does Your Mama Know About Me’ climbed to the no. 29 position on the Billboard Hot 100.

Soon after that, he was fired from the band and started his comedy duo along with Cheech Marin named Cheech and Chong in 1971.

After forming the duo, they began to perform stage shows and also launched their comedy album, ‘Cheech & Chong. As their first album came as a big hit, the duo released its second album ‘Big Bambu’.

In 1978, Tommy Chong appeared alongside Cheech in a comedy feature film titled ‘Up in Smoke’. After a couple of years, he landed the role of  Chong in the comedy film Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie in 1980.

Recently, he has also starred in Uncle Grandpa, and Trailer Park Boys: Out Of The Park: USA. In 2016, he gave voice to Zootopia.
