Halle Berry is a famous American actress. She has earned a name for herself in Hollywood. Halle was born on 14 August 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio, the USA. Her mother was Judith Ann Hawkins. And the name of her father was Jerome Jesse Berry. Judith was of an English ethnicity and had migrated to the USA from Liverpool, England, the UK. She was a psychiatric nurse and was working at the Cleveland Psychiatric Hospital.
It was at this hospital that Judith met Jerome who was an African-American. Jerome was an attendant in a ward at the same hospital. The two came close and started dating each other. The couple wed on 3 March 1964.
Their first child, daughter Heidi Berry-Henderson was born on 6 October 1964. They had a second daughter, Halle Berry in 1966. But in 1970, the couple had called it quits.
The abusive husband, Jerome and his second marriage
Halle and her elder sister, Heidi grew up without their father. Their mother brought them up single-handedly. Since the time, Jerome left his wife and kids, they have not seen him. Halle stated that the family are estranged from Jerome. They have no contact with him. In 1992, Halle also added that she does not know whether her biological father is alive or dead.
But Halle does remember that her father, Jerome was abusive towards his wife and Halle’s mother, Judith. He would beat her daily and also kick her down the stairs. He was an alcohol addict and Halle recalled that he would often hit Judith on her head with a wine bottle.
She had said:
‘I saw my mother battered, and could not do anything to stop it. ‘My father was tyrannical, lashing out at her for no reason. I felt the effects that had on our family – I’ve experienced what these women have gone through.’
Jerome was in a relationship with Edwina Taylor with whom he split just before he married Judith. But after his divorce from Judith, he again began dating his ex-girlfriend, Edwina. The couple had a daughter called Renee Berry who is a food service worker in Alabama and was born in 1959.
Jerome’s age, career, death
Jerome was born on 7 August 1934 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the USA. He was of mixed ethnicity with an American passport. His parents were Bob Berry and Cora Lee Powell.
He was doing odd jobs and was working at the Cleveland Psychiatric Hospital. But he left the job and later went on to work as a bus driver. Though Halle has labeled him as an abusive husband, Jerome’s daughter with Edwina, Renee states that he was nice with them and used to never beat them.
She had said that he would occasionally raise his hands on them and was not a chronic alcoholic. He would just enjoy a drink or two occasionally.
Jerome died in 2003 and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. His burial is at Cleveland Memorial Gardens in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
However, Halle did manage to forgive her father after his death and after she took help of some spiritual healers.
