Bill is an American bass guitarist, record producer, and record label owner. In Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, Laswell began his professional career as a bass guitarist in R&B and funk bands.

Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, and Funkadelic were among the shows he saw that mixed genres.

Jazz performers John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, and Miles Davis impacted him as well.

Laswell relocated to New York City in the late 1970s, immersing himself in the growing New York music scene.

With Martin Bisi, he created a recording studio and met Jean Karakos, the proprietor of Celluloid Records.

Baselines, Laswell’s solo debut album, was released in 1982. The song “Rockit,” which he co-wrote and produced for Herbie Hancock’s album Future Shock, gave him a breakthrough a year later.

He performed bass guitar on the album and co-wrote other tracks, which led to more collaborations with Hancock in the 2000s. For producing Hancock’s following album, Sound-System, he won a Grammy Award.

With Peter Brötzmann, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Sonny Sharrock, he formed the band Last Exit in 1986. At the London Jazz Festival in November 2018, he was a member of Dave Douglas’ Uplift band.

Laswell typically collaborates with a limited number of people.
