She is the daughter of John Raitt (father) and Marjorie Haydock (mother).

Bonnie Raitt graduated from the Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, New York. She joined Radcliffe College in 1967 with a major in social relations and African studies.

Bonnie Raitt was seen by a reporter in 1970 while opening the Gaslight Café in New York. The reporter began to spread the word about her performance.

The scouts from major record companies were attending her shows. In 1971 she accepted the offer from Warner Bros. and released her debut album, Bonnie Raitt. She was praised for her skills and as a bottleneck guitarist. Raitt released her second album “Give It  Up” in 1972.

She began to receive greater press coverage for a 1975 cover story for Rolling Stones.  In 1976 she made an appearance on Warren Zevon’s eponymous album.

In 1977 Bonnie Raitt released the album Sweet Forgiveness a remake of “Runaway”.  The album was a success and was her first commercial breakthrough.

Raitt’s next album was released in 1979 which resulted in poor reviews and modest sales.  She attempted to revisit the sound of her earlier records. She received the strongest reviews but did not improve her sales.

In 1985 she appeared in the video of Sun City. She sang the song as well. Raitt traveled to Moscow to participate in the first joint Soviet/American Peace Concert in 1987.

1986’s Nine Lives was Raitt’s last recording for the Warner Brothers. She joined Roy Orbison’s television special as a female background vocalist. Raitt also worked on the album Stay Awake, a tribute to Disney Music for A&M.

She was signed for Capitol by A&R executive Tim Devine. Raitt received her commercial success while working at the Capitol with her album Nick of Time in 1989.

In 1991 she released her album Luck of the Draw which awarded her three Grammy Awards.

Raitt was in the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in March 2000. She released “Silver Lining “ in 2002. The album had three singles “I cant Help You Now, Time of Our Lives, and the title track”.

Capitol released the compilation album “The Best of Bonnie Raitt “ in 2003. The album included the songs from Nick of Time, Luck of the Draw, Longing in Their Hearts, Road Tested, Fundamental and Silver Lining.

The DVD “Bonnie Raitt and Friends” was released in 2006. The album was recorded in Atlantic City on September 30, 2005. On June 7, 2008, she appeared in the broadcast of a radio program “ A Prairie Home Companion”. She performed two blues songs.

In 2011 Bonnie Raitt appeared in the documentary “Reggae Got Soul” which was featured on BBC. She performed a duet with Alicia Keys at the 54th Grammy Awards in February 2012.

In April 2012, she released her studio album named Slipstream. She was also featured in a campaign called 30 Songs/30 Days in September 2012.

Raitt announced the title of her 21st studio album, Just Like That, in 2022. The album will be published on April 22, 2022.

She released “Made Up Mind” as the lead single before the album’s release.
