An American businessperson, Bozoma Saint John is also the marketing executive who was the chief marketing officer (CMO) at Netflix. Moreover, she worked as CMO at Endeavor and chief brand officer at Uber until June 2018.

Bozoma Saint John was born on January 21, 1977, in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. She was born to parents Rev. Dr. Appianda Arthur, a Clarinet player, and Aba Arthur. Saint has a sister named Alua Arthur who is a lawyer and death doula. She holds an American nationality.

Bozoma was six months old when her family moved to Ghana. Her family also stayed in Washington DC and Nairobi, Kenya. When Bozoma was twelve years old, they went back to the United States and settled in Colorado Springs.

Talking about her educational qualifications, Bozoma enrolled in Wesleyan University and earned a degree in English and African American studies.

Bozoma Saint John: Professional Life, Career

Bozoma first worked at the advertising companies Amold Worldwide, and Spike Lee’s Spike DDB after finishing her college. Also, she was appointed as vice president of marketing at the fashion brand Ashley Stewart. Then, she joined PepsiCo in 2005 where she worked as a senior marketing manager.

As a head of music and entertainment marketing a PepsiCo, she handled the company’s launch into the music festival market. After almost ten years with the company, Saint was hired by Beats Music’s Jimmy Iovine in 2014. To manage the company’s marketing, she relocated to Los Angeles from New York.

Saint was chosen as the chief brand officer at Uber on June 6, 2017. After one year, she quit Uber and joined Endeavor in June 2018, as a chief marketing officer.

On June 30, 2020, Netflix announced Saint John as its new chief marketing officer, which makes Saint John the company’s third CMO for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Also, she was Netflix’s first Black C-level executive.

Writing and Podcasting

Along with journalist Katie Couric, Saint John launched the limited series podcast “Back to Biz with Katie and Boz” on iHeart Media in May 2020. In her autobiography, The Urgent Life, Saint John talks about her experiences working as a marketing executive, losing her husband, and raising her children alone, which was published by Viking Press on Februaury 21, 2023.

Activism, Advising, and Charity

Saint John started the #ShareTheMicNow, Instagram campaign with Luvvie Ajayi, Glennon Doyle, and Stacey Bendet. 52 Black women with significant platforms took over 52 White women’s Instgaram deeds on June 10, 2020, to highlight the work these women are doing to spark change.

Well-known Black women’s Instagram accounts such as Elaine Welteroth, Angelica Ross, Christine Michel Carter, and Gia Peppers, were controlled by Saint John while the accounts of white women such as Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Warren, and Diane von Furstenberg were taken over by Gia Peppers.

Furthermore, she has served as a member of the President’s Advisory Council for Wesleyan University and is also a member of the Black Advisory Board for Impact, an initiative by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Moreover, Saint received an indication into the American Marketing Association Marketing Hall of Fame in May 2022.
