Roberts began his illustrious career as a radio broadcaster at WAER-FM in Syracuse, New York in 1954, and moved on to WOLF-AM. His television broadcasting career, however, began in 1956 at WBUF-TV in Buffalo. Roberts later served for the Caribbean Forces Radio-TV Network and for the Armed Forces Radio.

In 1961, he added another feather to his career as WKBW-TV station’s weatherman and hosted the children’s show Rocketship 7 and Dialing for Dollars.

On November 18, 2009, at the age of 73, he retired from WPVI-TV. His last professional appearance was on December 11, 2009, during the 6 p.m. newscast alongside his long-time colleague Jim Gardner.

He is a regular actor and has acted in movies such as Blow Out, All My Children, Doogie Howser, M.D and Thirty-something and is a member of Screen Actors Guild. He recently appeared in the 100th episode of Bones, directed by his now-famous actor-son David Boreanaz.

Presently, Roberts has all the time in the world to stay involved in his favorite charities. He is considered a Saint in his career as an actor and TV host.  His retirement as a TV Weatherman has opened up further opportunities.  Time and again he appears on TV Series and movies such as TC 2000, The Jitters. Blow Out, Desert Hearts, Thanksgiving Day Parade and very recently as himself in the twice Emmy-nominated TV Series Bones.

He is well regarded in his community and stays active with most charities in his home metropolitan area.  He recently hosted the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon; granted the “Order of the Sons of Italy in America and selected as “Person of the Year” by The Muscular Dystrophy Association. Dave was awarded the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award from the Boy Scouts for ‘unselfish service to the youth of America’.

He has a devoted following in western New York and southern Ontario as the host  ‘Dave Thomas’  of the children’s program ‘Rocketship 7’ which aired from 1962-1978.

Roberts is very much active in organizations too. For instance, he is a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, along with Catholic Charity Drives, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Lupus Foundation and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

In 1993, he was the recipient of the National Weather Association’s “Weathercaster Seal of Approval. In 2000, he was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame and also received Philadelphia’s highest honor, “Person of the Year” after which he was inducted into the New York Broadcasting Hall of Fame in Buffalo.

Upon retirement in 2009, he was honored by the Philadelphia City Council for his broadcasting and charity work. And in 2011, he and his actor-son David Boreanaz were jointly awarded the Gold Medal by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters for their successful careers.
