He is the son of Johnny Brashear and Nicole Gauthier.  His birth name is Donald Maynard Brashear. He was born as the youngest of the three children. His father was an alcoholic and he moved in with his mother and stepfather in  Lorretteville, Quebec.

In his childhood, he suffered from abuse from his family and was eventually given up for foster care. Since childhood, he has built up a strong interest towards ice hockey and he worked as a paperboy to help pay for hockey.

Donald Brashear: Professional Life and Career

Donald Brashear started playing ice hockey professionally since 1992 and he retired in 2015. In 1992, he was signed by the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent. Before playing for the Canadiens in the NHL, he played three seasons in American Hockey League (AHL). He set a career high of 38 goals and 66 points during the 1993–94 AHL season.

On 13 November 1996, he was traded to the  Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jassen Cullimore. He set a Canucks franchise record with 372 PIMs during the 1997-98 seasons. He was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2001-02 season. He signed with the Quebec Radio X of the semi-pro Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey League (LNAH) worth $300,000 due to the cancellation of the 2004–05 NHL season by the NHL lockout. On 14 July 2006, he signed a one-year contract worth $1 million with the Washington Capitals and during the 2006-07 season, he signed a one-year contract extension for $1.1 million. He was suspended one game for punching New York Rangers defenceman Aaron Ward.

On 24 January 2008, he again signed a one-year contract extension worth $1.2 million. After the contract tenure with the Capitals, he signed the two-year contract with the New York Rangers worth $2.8 million. He played for  Modo Hockey of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) before his retirement from the professional ice hockey.Besides ice hockey, Brashear is also a mixed martial arts player. He signed a three-fight contract with the mixed martial arts promoter Ringside MMA in April 2011. On 4 June 2011, he debuted in MMA in a winning match with Mathieu Bergeron.
