Anson Carter started playing ice hockey professionally since 1996 and retired in 2008. He was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft after playing AAA level hockey in the Metro Toronto Hockey League.

He made his professional debut in an ice hockey game for the Washington Capitals before being traded to the Boston Bruins on March 1, 1997. After playing for Bruins for several seasons, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers where he recorded his career-high of 32 assists and 60 points in the second season for Oilers.

On 11 March 2003, he was traded to the New York Rangers along with Ales Pisa for Radek Dvořák and Cory Cross.

On 23 January 2004, he was traded back to the Washington Capitals but soon he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on 8 March 2004 in exchange for  Jared Aulin. He signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks in 2003 where he set his new career-high in goals with 33.

On 13 September 2006, he signed a one-year contract with the  Columbus Blue Jackets and he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on February 23, 2007. He rejoined Edmonton Oilers on a try-out basis during their training camp in September 2007.

On 5 November 2007, he joined HC Lugano of the Swiss Nationalliga A before his retirement. Carter was also a team member of the Canadian national team that won the 2003 World Championship. He also works as the hockey analyst for NBC Sports Network and for the MSG network.
