Finally, the station started paying him a small hourly wage after he spent two days covering a Philadelphia race riot. However, he did not leave his job as a teacher until the year 1967, when he finally joined WCBS radio in NY as a reporter.

Ed held many other positions with CBS. Firstly, he worked briefly in Paris in 1971. After that, he was stationed in Saigon, Vietnam, and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After gaining some valuable experience, he moved to Washington, D.C., and started covering presidential campaigns in the year 1976. Eventually, he became a correspondent at theWhite House.

However, his feature stories were on topics from around the world. In 1980, he won awards for two CBS Special Reports: The Boat People, after exploring the difficulty of Southeast Asian refugees, and Blacks in America: With All Deliberate Speed?. His in-depth study of Afro-American progress since the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Finally, he joined the staff of the long-running 60 Minutes in the year 1981.

In his 26-year career on 60 Minutes, he covered over 500 stories, covering nearly every possible type of news ranging from ‘heavy’ segments on war, poverty, politics, and corruption, to other lighter biographical aspects, or stories related to sports, music, and cuisine.

He left this world on November 9, 2006, at age 65 after suffering from leukemia.
