He announced the company had installed a chip in a human for the first time.

Elon Musk has announced his brain chip company, Neuralink has installed its first chip in humans.

The 52-year-old billionaire confirmed in a post on X on Monday, January 29, writing,

“The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well, Initial results show promising neuro spike detection.”

The operation took place on Sunday, January 28, getting a breakthrough in neuroscience and the development of brain-machine interface implants.

Well, Neuralink is endeavoring to bring life-changing technology from the lab to the real world.

Similarly, he mentioned in another post that Neuralink’s debut product would be named ‘Telepathy’.

Musk claimed that the initial users of Neuralink’s technology will most likely be those who have lost the use of limbs. He exemplified,

“Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer,”

Neuralink on human testing

In May 2023, Elon Musk received regulatory approval to conduct the first clinical trial of its experimental device in humans.

The FDA previously rejected a 2022 application to conduct human clinical trials, claiming,

“Major safety concerns involving the device’s lithium battery; the potential for the implant’s tiny wires to migrate to other areas of the brain; and questions over whether and how the device can be removed without damaging brain tissue.”

The purpose of Neuralink is to create a symbiotic relationship between people and artificial intelligence.

Telepathy is expected to restore lost functions between the brain and body, such as communication or movement in paralyzed patients.

Further, the Telsa CEO hinted at the company’s next product ‘Blindsight‘, which aims to restore vision for the blind and visually impaired.

Musk said that the Neuralink chip will have the potential to “direct vision to the brain” by stimulating particular parts of the visual cortex.

It may even be able to restore eyesight in cases when the optic nerve, which links the brain and eye, has been severed.
