The Idol won’t have Season 2

It’s over for The Idol.

Lily-Rose Depp and The Weekend’s controversial HBO Max show won’t have its second season, Page Six revealed.

An HBO spokesperson said,

“’The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response.”

“After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

The obscene drama, co-created by Depp’s co-star Abel The Weeknd Tesfaye and Sam Levinson of Euphoria fame, became infamous for its wild sex scenes and nudity.

Rolling Stone even slammed the chaotic filming environment and called the show torture porn and rape fantasy. British GQ said that it consisted of “the worst sex scene in history.”

The 24-year-old  Chanel muse starred as a troubled pop star who ends up in the hands of a cult leader portrayed by Tesfaye.

In June, many sources revealed the producers were not planning for a second season of the show.  An insider said at the time, “This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always … a limited series.”

An HBO source revealed on Monday,

“boundary-pushing content is what audiences look for in HBO original programming, and ‘The Idol’ certainly delivered on that front. [It] was one of the most talked-about shows of the summer and cemented itself in the zeitgeist.”

While they did think of a second season, the decision to end it was made most recently.

The show also gained all the negative attention when it was cut from six to five episodes after the departure of Amy Seimetz.

One show source previously reported that working with Tesfaye, 33, in character to Tedros was “not an ideal experience … and not one I am eager to repeat,” while another called him “egomaniacal.”

Lily-Rose insisted,

“I love Abel so much. He was able to melt into this role in a way that is really difficult for anybody to do.”

Following the news of the second season’s cancellation, fans took to social media to express their opinions with one writing,

”it was a horrible show, but I like Lily-Rose. I hope she sticks around and finds better roles. She’s interesting to watch.”

Another wrote,

”It was sooooooo horribly bad, it was a must watch, just to see how low and awful they could go.”

”I knew after the first episode it was never going to make a second season, that and the fact it was supposed to be 10 episodes and was cut to 6.”

”RIP! The Weekend proved he is a talentless hack. Well done!”

A third wrote,

”never saw it; never will; never mind”
