Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette will fill in for Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as guest judges in the next episode of American Idol.

Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette will join Luke Bryan as guest judges on American Idol

Luke Bryan will be joined by Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran as guest judges on “American Idol” on May 7. The duo will be replacing Katy Perry and Lionel Richie who will be traveling overseas for King Charles III’s coronation.

ABC made the announcement on May 1, while Perry and Richie continued to provide live updates from Windsor Castle. Morissette and Sheeran will take over for the show’s “616” episode, during which America will vote on the remaining top five contestants.

This marks the first appearance for both Morissette and Sheeran on the show, and they will perform their own songs with Morissette also mentoring the contenders who will perform her songs.

Luke told PEOPLE in a group interview:

“When we’re up there, we’re speaking from the heart. And Alanis and Ed, they’ll do that also.”

He added:

“They’re obviously seasoned in every aspect of the industry. It’s funny, over the years, Lionel and Katy probably can almost predict what I’m going to say. So it’ll be interesting that I’ll be up there with people that I can’t predict exactly what they’re going to say.”

Meanwhile, Katy Perry is also confident that the pair will do well:

“I loved the reaction from the contestants. I idolize Alanis, Jagged Little Pill is the reason I do music. Ed Sheeran is the best producer, writer, artist, life-liver. I’m really excited to watch his documentary because I know that he’s been through a lot.”

She added:

“These are two people who always stay true to themselves and are real so I think it’s awesome to have them as judges.”

The finalists will also team up to perform duets of Sheeran’s biggest hits.

The long-running talent competition series currently has eight finalists, ranging in age from 17 to 25, including Colin Stough, Haven Madison, Iam Tongi, Megan Danielle, Oliver Steele, Warren Peay, Wé Ani, and Zachariah Smith.

“American Idol” airs live coast to coast on Sunday from 8-10 p.m. ET/5-7 p.m. PT on ABC.

Sheeran is waiting for a verdict in his Marvin Gaye copyright case

A jury in Manhattan is about to deliver a verdict in the copyright case against Ed Sheeran. The descendants of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote “Let’s Get It On” with Marvin Gaye in 1973, brought the case.

They claim that Sheeran’s 2014 song ‘Thinking Out Loud” has copied several elements of the classic track, including its harmonies, melody, and rhythm, without permission.

The lawsuit was initially filed in 2017 but has taken six years to reach the federal court in Manhattan.

The British singer has denied the allegations, arguing that his song uses common pop music elements. If found guilty, the trial will move to a second phase to determine the damages.
