Hilary Watson, wife of golfer Tom Watson dies due to pancreatic cancer at age of 63!

Hilary Watson was only 63 years of age. She died on 27 November 2019 Wednesday night. She was the wife of World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Watson and was battling cancer for the past 2.5 years.

Hilary Watson, the wife of world-famous golfer, Tom Watson passed away on 27 November 2019. She was only 63 years of age at the time of her tragic death.

Her death was due to complications of pancreatic cancer which she had been suffering for the past 2.5 years. The former PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem stated:

“Hilary was a very special person – bright, principled, accomplished and she had a gift of uplifting those around her,”

“And when Hilary set out to do something, she did it successfully. I’ll always remember the stories of her rodeo days, where she won all sorts of medals and ribbons, even after her illness. Most of all, Hilary was a wonderful mate for Tom, we could all see that. My heart goes out to Tom and his family at this difficult time.”

Hilary Watson’s chronic ailment

In October 2017, Hilary had abdominal pain for which she sought medical consultation. The treating doctors diagnosed her with pancreatic cancer.

They subjected her to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In May 2018, she had surgery to remove her tumor.

Pancreatic cancer has a five-year survival rate of 9%. Despite this poor prognosis and the life-threatening nature of the disease, Hilary kept herself active and used to participate in cutting horse competitions.

She also won these tough and labor-intensive competitions. She came fourth in the National Cutting Horse Association Amateur Rider of the Year finals in 2018. In 2019, she landed fifth position in the annual competition.

In 2018, in an interview she gave to Kansas City Star newspaper, she had said:

“I keep popping up where people are thinking, ‘What are you doing? Why are you here?’” 

“I think that’s what kept me going through all of that, having those shows and being enthusiastic and excited about doing something.

“Whether I’m feeling good or not, I was going to still get on that horse. And have some fun doing it. That’s been a godsend for me.”

The golf star, Tom played his last Senior Final in the summer of 2019 and wanted to spend time with his wife. He said:

“Really happy now doing something a little bit different with my life,”

Tom has won 39 titles in his career with PGA and this included 8 majors. Another 14 titles, Tom won in PGA TOUR champions. He continued:

“Being with my wife, Hilary, who loves to ride the horses, and I love to ride the horses, and we’re going to do something different now.”

Hilary wed Tom in 1999. The couple has three children together Charles, Kelly Paige, and Ross Donald. She was the stepmother of Meg Carr and Michael Watson. Hilary is also survived by two sisters-Alicia Korte and Christine Holton.

Ted Bishop’s Tribute to Hilary Watson

The former president of PGA of America, Ted Bishop also paid tribute to Hilary. He wrote on his Facebook page:

“Tom will tell you that Hilary was his hero. … and for many reasons. How these two people dealt with the devastation of the worst that cancer can 
muster up is truly an inspiration to us all,” 

“Hilary was a beautiful woman who was also one of the fiercest competitors who ever lived. Tom is an eight-time major champion golfer, but more so a man who has always dealt with adversity in amazing ways. It’s a sad day, but Hilary’s fight is over and she leaves us with many beautiful memories.”
