Jameela Jamil is not happy with the Met Gala celebrating Karl Lagerfeld
Jameela Jamil, an actress and advocate for body positivity, has voiced her disapproval of the Met Gala’s celebration of Karl Lagerfeld. The prominent fashion designer passed away in 2019.
In a lengthy post on Instagram, she wrote:
“Last night Hollywood and fashion said the quiet part out loud when a lot of famous feminists chose to celebrate at the highest level, a man who was so publicly cruel to women, to fat people, to immigrants and to sexual assault survivors.”

She continued:
“Nobody has perfect morals, least of all me, but Jesus Christ we had a year to course correct here, and not award the highest honor possible to a known bigot… and everyone just decided all of a sudden we can separate the art from the artists when *convenient*. And it’s one rule for us, and another rule for everybody else. Last night we relinquished our right to be taken at all seriously about anything important.”
In the caption, she explained that her post wasn’t about cancel culture or Karl himself, but more about “how selective cancel culture is within liberal politics.”
The theme of this year’s gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The event corresponded with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
At the event, celebrities from the entertainment industry, fashion industry, and high society in New York walked the red carpet in extravagant attire that paid tribute to Lagerfeld.
Why did Jamil slam celebrities for honoring Karl Lagerfeld?
Jameela Jamil openly slammed Hollywood for the celebration of Karl Lagerfeld at the Met Gala. While he was an important fashion designer, he was controversial with his views and comments about different topics.
In 2016, Kim Kardashian was a victim of a robbery in Paris. Lagerfeld accused her of attracting the attack due to her display of wealth.
“The thing right now is Adele Despite being a little overweight, she has a lovely face and a divine voice.”
He later claimed that his statement was misinterpreted and apologized.

Lagerfeld also faced criticism for his negative remarks about the #MeToo movement. He expressed his frustration with women in the industry coming forward with stories of sexual abuse.
Jameela expressed her disapproval of his past comments that were overlooked, and the decision to honor him at the Met Gala.
She posted photos of his divisive remarks on social media after the theme was announced.
Her caption read:
“Why is THIS who we celebrate when there are so many amazing designers out there who aren’t bigoted white men? What happened to everyone’s principles and ‘advocacy’? You don’t get to stand for justice in these areas and then attend the celebration of someone who revealed his own public disdain for marginalized people.”
