John Coughlin was an American pair skater. He was famous for being the 2012 Four Continents silver medallist and 2012 U.S. national champion with Caydee Denney. He was also the 2011 U.S. champion with his previous partner Caitlin Yankowskas.

He began skating at the age of six. He competed with Krista Smith, Kelsey Parker, and Lucy Galleher. John made his partnership with Bridget Namiotka in late 2004 but they announced the end of their partnership on July 3, 2007.

He along with Caitlin Yankowskas had a tryout in early August 2007 and they were trained under Dalilah Sappenfield in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They conducted their Ave Maria long program, which was attributed to Coughlin’s mother during the 2010-2011 seasons. The pair placed sixth in their debut at the World Championships in April 2011, and it was the best result by an American pair since 2006. The pair announced their separation on May 4.

He declared his partner Caydee Denney on 17 May 2011 and they trained under coach Sappenfield at the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs. They bagged the opportunity to perform at the 2012 Four Continents where they also won the silver medal and were placed eight at 2012 Worlds. Coughlin had a problem in his left hip and went for surgery to repair a torn labrum.

They missed the 2013 U.S. Championships. The pair won silver at the 2013 U.S. Classic and won bronze at 2013 at the Trophée Eric Bompard. They could not make their way to the 2014 Winter Olympics because of Danny’s right ankle injury. They stated in June 2014 that they would not compete in the 2014-2015 season.

John took his own life by committing suicide on January 18, 2019, at the age of 33. He was under restriction by the US Safe Sport before his death. The actual reason behind his death is still unclear.
