He was born to Vietnamese parents of ethnic Chinese ancestry. He has not revealed the identities of his parents but he is one of their nine children.

In 1978, Quan’s family escaped from Vietnam, and he, his father, and five siblings fled to a refugee camp in Hong Kong, while his mother and three other siblings escaped to Malaysia. The entire family migrated to the United States in 1979.

Regarding his education, Quan went to Mount Gleason Junior High School located in Tujunga, California, and Alhambra High School situated in Alhambra, California. In 1999, he completed his studies at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

At the age of 12, Quan began his acting career by playing the role of Short Round, Harrison Ford’s sidekick in the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, after the casting director held auditions for children at Castelar Elementary School, which included his younger brother.

He then went on to star in the movie Breathing Fire (1991) and had a small part in Encino Man (1992). Quan also took on the lead role in the forty-episode Mandarin-language TV show The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter, which aired in 1993.

Additionally, he acted in the 1996 co-production of Red Pirate, which was produced in Hong Kong and Vietnam.

As he grew older, Quan struggled to secure acting roles in the US and eventually decided to leave the industry. He enrolled in the film program at the University of Southern California and after graduating, he was invited by Corey Yuen to travel to Toronto, Canada, to help choreograph fight scenes in X-Men (2000).

Over the next ten years, he worked on several productions in both Asia and the US. Quan also assisted Yuen again as a stunt choreographer for The One (2001) and worked as an assistant director on Wong Kar-wai’s 2046 (2004).

Quan was inspired by the success of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 to make a comeback in acting. During this time, the Daniels were casting for their movie Everything Everywhere All at Once in search of an actor to play the role of Waymond Wang.

Quan was discovered by co-director Daniel Kwan on Twitter and was asked to audition for the film, eventually landing the part. His performance in the film was highly acclaimed, leading to media attention and further opportunities.
