Kelly Rowland, 41 had an estranged relationship with her own father, Christopher Lovett. They were contactless for over 30 years.

Kelly was born on February 11, 1981, to father Christopher Lovett and mother Doris Rowland Garrison. Her birth name is Kelendria Trene Rowland.

On Tuesday (March 22), the singer made her first public appearance along with her father in an interview show ‘The Today show’. During an episode, they talked about their painful past and emotional reunion of three decades of estrangement.

Rowland revealed that Jay-Z played an important role in helping her to reconnect with her estranged father after three decades.

Rowland’s mother Doris Rowland Garrison, who passed away in 2014 from a heart attack left Christopher when Kelly was 7 years old as he wasn’t ready for parenthood.

Also, Kelly previously revealed her father was an abusive alcoholic which forced her late mother to leave him.

Kelly Rowland and her father reconcile

At the age of 7, she moved to Houston, Texas along with her mother.

At the time, she and her mother left her father due to his ‘alcoholic and aggressive’ behavior. He recalled the moment during the interview, she said,

“My understanding of where my dad was as a kid was that he was not really ready as a father,”

she then continued,

“I was angry at him. I was disappointed in him. I had all of those feelings of abandonment,”

Kelly also disclosed that she had even asked her security teams to kick him out if he ever decided to attend one of her shows.

Five years ago, she met up with her father in October 2018 after the birth of her first child and the death of her mother.

While talking to TODAY, she revealed,

“Before I walked in, I had all these thoughts of what I was gonna say, I had all these questions lined up.”

The singer concluded her interview by saying, “As parents, we have to give our parents grace. It’s never too late. Forgiveness is always right there.”

On the other hand, Lovett said that it was “like a dream” when he met his daughter for the first time. He said,

“People used to tell me, ‘I saw your daughter,’ and I used to sit there and say, ‘Well, I didn’t,’ and it used to hurt,”

He also revealed that he had tried to see Rowland when she was a part of Destiny’s Child with Beyoncé and Michelle Williams but the security didn’t let him in.
