In 1982, Starr discovered the talented group New Edition during a talent show. He worked with them as a co-writer and co-producer for their debut album, which included popular tracks like “Candy Girl,” “Is This the End,” and “Popcorn Love.”

Despite the album’s success and a successful tour, New Edition accused Starr of financial misconduct in late 1983. They filed a lawsuit and won, allowing them to continue using their group name. New Edition signed with a new label and continued to release hit songs throughout the 1980s.

In 1986, Maurice Starr formed a new band called New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) with five white teenagers. He aimed to replicate the success of New Edition, believing that a white group would be even more popular.

By 1989, NKOTB became a rising act in the United States. Starr played a significant role in their marketing success, including merchandise sales like posters and T-shirts.

Afterward, Starr attempted to recreate his previous achievements with various artists such as Perfect Gentlemen, Rick Wes, Homework, the Superiors, Heart Body & Soul, Classic Example, Tommy Page, and Ana.

However, none of these acts achieved the same level of popularity as New Edition and NKOTB. Starr also tried to revive Tiffany’s career with her album “New Inside,” but it failed to make an impact on the charts.
