Cole was born as Natalie Maria Cole in Los Angeles, California on February 6, 1950. She was born to parents Nat King Cole and Maria Hawkins Ellington.

Throughout her childhood years, she grew up in the affluent Hancock Park district of Los Angeles. As both her parents were active in the field of music, Cole developed an interest in singing at an early age.
