Who is Otto Addo?

Otto Addo is a German-born Ghanaian football manager and former football player. He is the manager of the Ghana National Football team and works as the talent coach for Borrusia Dortmund. Addo is known for his playing career in his early days by playing for various clubs including:

Otto Addo: Birth, Education, Parents, Siblings

Nana Otto Addo (46-year-old) was born on 9 June 1975 in Hamburg, West Germany to a Ghanaian couple. His parents Ebenezer Awuku Addo and Naomi Amiokor Ntreh moved to Germany for a better future. He has got one brother Eric Addo.

Addo never got any formal education and started playing football for Hummels buttel at 8.

Otto Addo: Career

The retired legendary Ghanaian-German footballer Otto Addo had a wonderful career as a player and a coach. Addo started his career in 1991 in Hamburg playing for Hamburger SV. In 1993 he moved to Vfl 93 Hamburg where he played 80 league matches and scored 4 goals from 1993 to 1996. Then before he joined Vfl 93he played for fellow club Bramfelder SV for about a year.

He was signed and went on to star for Hannover 96 in 1996. He made a big impression in the squad which scored more than 100 goals in 1997 and was promoted to division 2.

In Division 2, he scored 7 goals in 30 games in his first season. Because of his outstanding performance, various clubs desired to acquire him. In the summer of 1999, he signed in for Borussia Dortmund.

Otto for Dortmund

Otto played 75 games in Dortmund and won Bundesliga in 2002. But his career was not so overwhelming in Dortmund where he faced a lot of knee injuries and was forced to stay out of the ground most of the time. On 15 July 2001, he tore his cruciate ligaments for the first time in a match against SC-Freiburg and later on he injured his knee for the second time on 7 September 2002.

Again in 2004 while he was playing for the national team Ghana in the 2004 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda he was injured and had to sit out for the whole year 2004. Because of these injuries, his career was under threat so on the last weekend of January 2005 he played his last game for the club against Borussia Monchengladbach.

2005-2008

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, he transferred to FSV Mainz where he did not make any initial impact but still earned a seat for the Ghanian Squad for the 2006 World Cup 2007. He signed up for his hometown club Hamburger SV where he played till 2008. At the age of 38, he announced his retirement from playing football in 2008.

International career

Since his emergence in German football he was suggested to play for the German National team yet Addo chose to play for Ghana and debuted for the Ghana National team on 28 February 1999 against, Eritrea where Ghana was defeated by5-0 and he achieved international prominence when he led the national team in the 2000 Africa Cup of nations. He started as a right midfielder for the country in the 2006 FIFA World Cup against the Czech Republic on 17 June 2006 which they won by 2-0 and they won the match against the USA by 2-1.

Addo started his coaching career with his former hometown club Hamburger SV in 2009, serving as a youth team coach and assistant manager until 2015. In December 2013, he was called by the Ghana National team as the head scout for the national team and before the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

Addo was appointed as a ‘talent coach’ by Borrusia Dortmund in April 2019. In December 2020 he was promoted to serve as a first-team assistant coach to Edin Terzic. Addo won his first trophy as a coach when Dortmund defeated RB Leipzig in the 2020-21 DFB-POKAL.

On 9 February 2022, the Ghanaian National Team announced that they had appointed Addo as the interim coach for the National Team ahead of the team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup final play-off match against Nigeria. On 29 March 2022, he led the Ghanian National team to qualify for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar on an away goal after a draw to Nigeria.
