Azinger won eleven tournaments on the PGA Tour in seven seasons, from 1987 to 1993, resulting in his one major title, the Inverness 1993 PGA Championship, which he won against Greg Norman in a sudden-death playoff.
After making a bogey on both the 71st and 72nd holes, Azinger ended one shot behind Nick Faldo at the 1987 Open Championship at Muirfield.
He was an American Captain of the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Paul leads the American team to its first win since 1999 over the European squad.
He declined an invitation to the White House to win the Ryder Cup team. From 2005 to 2015, he worked as a senior analyst for ESPN and ABC Sports Golf News.
In 2018, he joined the main golf analyst at NBC Sports to replace Johnny Miller, an American former professional golfer who joined the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998.
He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his right shoulder in December 1993. Treatment required 5 weeks of radiation and 6 months of chemotherapy.
Just before the diagnosis of non-lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Paul beat Greg Norman in the second round of a sudden-death playoff during the 2nd round of regulation at 12-under 272 in the 1993 PGA Championship at Inverness.
On May 1, 1995, Paul published the book, “Zinger,” which illustrated his struggle with non-lymphoma.
He released another book on May 1, 2010, titled “Cracking the Code: The Strategy of the Winning Ryder Cup: Make It Work for You.”
