Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy are expecting their second child!

The couple announced the news to PEOPLE in January 2023. The professional dancers are expecting their second child together.

The happy news comes after the pair revealed their three miscarriages and Murgatroyd documented her arduous reproductive struggle on social media for months.

She told PEOPLE:

“All natural, it happened. I didn’t even know I was pregnant for so long until I was really feeling sick. I danced through Dancing with the Stars with it. I started feeling weird, started feeling a little bit sick and a little bloated and I didn’t want to test for weeks.”

After finally taking a pregnancy test around her “six or seven-week” mark, she was taken aback by the results. She said:

“I think it was the fastest positive I’ve ever seen in my life. It just came up super quick and I was just shocked. It’s been completely different from my past pregnancy.”

She added:

“It wasn’t like I jumped for joy and I shouted from the rooftops, ‘Oh my God, I’m pregnant. Yay!’ It was more like a, ‘Okay, well let’s see what happens because I’ve been through this four other times, and it hasn’t worked.’ So I was very skeptical. I didn’t even tell Maks for a while.”

The couple had miscarriages

The couple got married in 2017 and for Chmerkovskiy, the first miscarriage was the lowest point in their relationship so far. In June 2022, Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy sat down with PEOPLE and talked about their infertility journey.

He revealed to PEOPLE:

“I think the darkest part is when the person you are in love with calls you and she says that she had a miscarriage in the bathroom, that’s as dark as it can get.”

Fast forward nine months later, she was pregnant again and was planning to fly to New York to surprise her husband with the news. Unfortunately, just days before the flight, Murgatroyd miscarried.

She recalled the dark time:

“I had to call him and say, ‘It’s happened again’. This was the first time that I heard him get really upset, which was hard to hear because I know how it affects him too.”

She added:

“I never thought that two healthy, athletic people could be in a predicament like this. It’s a lot to process.”

Their son, Shai wanted a sibling

They already have a son named Shai, 5, who expected to have a sibling and regularly asked about a brother or sister.

She said:

“It was a lot some days. Very emotional because I didn’t know what to tell him anymore. I told him the first two times, but I kept it vague. I didn’t make it into this whole, ‘Oh my God, we’re having a baby,’ thing. I just said, ‘Be careful with Mummy’s belly. She has a baby in there.’ “

She added:

“I guess that’s been another really hard part of it because he sees other kids with siblings.”

Murgatroyd is due in June and knows the sex of the baby. However, she won’t be revealing it to the public right now.
