‘The Mandalorian’ actor Rio Hackford was pronounced dead on Thursday, April 14, aged 51. Rio died of uveal melanoma, a very aggressive and rare form of cancer.
His parents, Taylor Hackford and Helen Mirren confirmed the news on Tuesday by sharing a joint statement to PEOPLE. The statement reads,
“Rio died of uveal melanoma, a very aggressive and rare form of cancer. We would beg everyone reading this to get their eyes tested at least once a year, which might save their loved ones from this cancer,”
Taylor, who himself is a director then added,
“Helen and I are both inspired by the life of our son and stepson, Rio Hackford, and heartbroken by his loss. His life showed us how to live in generosity and community. He shared his life’s journey with so many who now mourn him, and at the same time, celebrate their fortune in knowing him,”

Helen Mirren pays tribute to her late stepson
Following the tragic death of Rio Hackford, his stepmother, the Oscar-winning actress has paid tribute. She shared a photo of the actor on her respective IG handle alongside the caption,
“El Rio”
Rio was the son of director Taylor, to whom the actress Helen Mirren has been married since 1997. Helen is the third wife of Taylor Hackford.
