Woodson was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on March 10, 1965, as a son of James Woodson (Father) and Linda Jo (Mother). He has three siblings and he is the youngest among all.

Woodson’s full name is Roderick Kevin Woodson.

Rod Woodson completed his high school at R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne. Later he joined Purdue University with a desire to study electrical engineering and gained a full scholarship to play football.

Rod Woodson: Professional Life, Career

Woodson is the state champion in both the low and high hurdles junior and senior seasons. He has also played basketball for both junior and senior seasons.

When in college he played as a cornerback and a kick returner on the defensive field and as a running back and wide receiver on the offensive field.

On October 28, 1987, Woodson signed for Pittsburgh as a cornerback. A banner stating “Rod is God” hung in the Three Rivers Stadium for years. In the same year, his first career interception was recorded as well. At the 1987 USA Olympic Festival, he won the bronze medal. He has also won medals in the IAAF Grand Prix meetings.

In 1995, against the game with Detroit Lions Woodson tore his ACL while trying to tackle Barry Sanders and had to go through reconstructive knee surgery.

He was back on the field 19 weeks later to play in super bowl XXX. He became the first player to return from reconstructive knee surgery. Later when the Rooney family elected not to renew his contract he became a free agent from Pittsburgh.

In 1997, he signed for the San Francisco 49ers after playing with Pittsburgh for 10 years.

He only played with the San Francisco 49ers for a season.

In 1998, he signed for the Baltimore Ravens. He played with the Ravens for 4 years. During his time in the Baltimore Ravens, he won the Super Bowl XXXV.

In 2002 he signed for the Oakland Raiders where he played for 2 years and during this time he also appeared in his third super bowl. Later in 2004, the Raiders released him after failing the team physically.

On the ground of his former high school, he used to hold an annual youth football camp and activities till 2008.  He was also part of BBC Sports NFL coverage in 2007.

On February 14, 2011, the Raiders hired Woodson as their cornerback coach.

In 2013, Woodson joined Pittsburgh Steelers as an intern coach.

In 2015, Woodson again signed for the Raiders as an assistant defensive back coach. And later promoted to cornerbacks coach following the firing of Robertson in 2017.

Awards and Achievements

Woodson as a defensive back is the all-time leader in the NFL. During his career, he has recorded 71 interceptions, 32 fumble recoveries, 17 touchdowns, 2362 punt return yards, 4894 kickoff return yards, and 137 fumble return yards.

With 12 interceptions returned for the touchdown he holds the league record and his 1483 return yards interception is the second in NFL history.

As a record for his position, Woodson is named to the Pro Bowl Eleven times. And also the first player to earn trips to the Pro Bowl at cornerback. He was 1993’s Defensive Player of the year and also the All-Pro selection seven times.

Woodson was one of the five active players named in the NFL’S 75th Anniversary Team and ranked 87 on the 100 Greatest Football Players list by The Sporting News.

He is one of the 100 greatest players of the 20th century. And later in 2007, he ranked 22 out of 25 best NFL players of the past 25Years on USA Today.

Woodson was in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on January 31, 2009.
