Gymnast Simone Biles’s most memorable moments in Olympics history!
Simone Arianne Biles is an American artistic gymnast. With a combined total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is the most decorated American gymnast and is regarded by many to be the greatest and most dominant gymnast of all time.
In a shock Olympics twist, Biles has pulled out of women’s gymnastics team finals halfway through the competition. After struggling with her landing in the first vault event and scoring lower than all the Russian and American gymnasts in the discipline, organizers announced Biles had pulled out of competing in the next piece of apparatus.
So, here are some of Simone Biles’ best gymnastics moments,
1)Biles wins 4 gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics
It was Biles’ first Olympic run at Rio in 2016. And she made a splash. It’s safe to say she led her team to gold. Oh and if that weren’t enough, she also won four individual gold medals, which no other American gymnast had ever done. And only four other gymnasts had done this before her.
2)She has 25 world titles to her name
Biles proved she’s in a class of her own when she became the most decorated female gymnast at an elite level at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 2019, beating all previous records. Her accomplishments include being a four-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time all-around World Champion. She beat the record of 23 medals, set by Vitaly Scherbo in 1996, with her balance beam routine, which got her no. 24.
3)Biles makes history at the 2018 U.S. National Championships
Two years after her first Olympic Games, Biles proved she was unstoppable. In 2018, at the U.S. National Championships, Biles became the first woman in the U.S. to earn five national all-around titles.
4)Her signature move
At just 16, Biles began competing with a mesmerizing double flip and ‘half twist midair’ on the floor. The incredibly difficult move, which since became known as ‘The Biles’, is one of her signatures. Biles is still the only woman who has performed The Biles on a vault at a competitive level.
5)Biles lands her triple-double at the 2019 USA Gymnastics Championships
In August 2019, Biles became the first-ever female gymnast to cleanly land a “triple-double” at the USA Gymnastics Championships. The challenging move consists of two double backflips and three twists, and later became known as the “Biles II.” At that event, she also became the first person to attempt and land a double-double dismount on the balance beam.
6)Biles becomes the first woman to win seven U.S. women’s all-around titles
Biles made history. She became the first woman to win a record seventh U.S. senior women’s all-around title.
Simone said after her victory.
“It’s really crazy, and I appreciate everyone that’s come out to watch and support us, especially after the year we’ve had.”
7)She’s carried the pressure of being the team leader
After the US gymnastics team posted uncharacteristically low scores during the Olympic qualifiers, she opened up to fans about her mental health on social media.
Biles said on Instagram
“[I]t wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times,”
Win or lose, Biles is clearly an undisputed star of the Olympics and has already re-written the gymnastics history books.
8)Biles lands the Yurchenko double pike on the vault
Covid-19 and the delay in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics didn’t dull Biles’ drive. In May 2021, at her first competition in over a year, Biles became the first woman to land the Yurchenko double pike on the vault.
