Tara Lipinski and Todd Kapostasy are expanding their family. The Olympic figure skater, 41, is expecting her first child via surrogacy with her husband Todd.
The happy news comes after almost five years of struggle with their infertility journey.
The couple shared their initial reactions about how they felt when they first found out their Surrogate, Mikayla was pregnant during their Thursday’s episode of the “Unexpecting” podcast.
The soon-to-be mom recalled,
“It was just so surreal. It couldn’t have been happening to us like we don’t get this news, this doesn’t happen to us. I almost didn’t believe it,”
“I was just sobbing, Like that ugly sobbing of years of all of this trauma pouring out of my eyes. I guess I don’t know how to describe it other than just pure relief, And obviously happiness and thinking that maybe our lived are going to finally change and we aren’t going to be in the sam awful hamster wheel anymore.”

Todd, on the other hand, continued to express his own delight at the news that he had started making laps around the kitchen island.
“It was like a touchdown celebration, going nuts. We’re on the deck of this house looking at the pacific ocean and the sun is setting and we’re like, ‘We’re pregnant with a kid after the heartbeat scan, It felt like this crazy—almost cliché end of a movie—where the sun was finally setting on our horrific fertility journey.”
Who is their surrogate?
Tara revealed that their surrogate, Mikayla, resides in another state even though they have been communicating frequently and have been close friends.
She gushed,
“She’s been able to give me reassurance and make the journey as good as it can be, especially for someone who has been through a lot of trauma.”
“There was an immediate connection and bod between us, one I just didn’t expect to feel so strongly. Two peas in a pod type of feeling…teammates on the deepest level,”
Tara Lipinski has earlier experienced four miscarriages
The figure skater has always been open about her pregnancy struggles. In early August she took to Instagram to share her fertility journey.
“I was so overwhelmed and wasn’t emotionally or mentally ready to bring more people on board. My life turned upside down and became completely consumed by our heartbreaking and often devastating fertility journey.”
She continued by saying that she had had 24 anesthetic procedures, 4 miscarriages, 4 D&Cs, 6 unsuccessful IVF transfers, 8 retrievals, and an endometriosis diagnosis that required 2 major surgeries.
“It has been an excruciatingly painful journey that has been filled with loss & dealing with the grief that comes along with that. We are lucky to have the ability to make our own embryos but pregnancy is another story.”
“My hope is to truly bring more awareness to the world of IVF, pregnancy loss and couples struggling to build a family. Most people have heard about IVF but not often the cruel existence this forces upon its patients when things don’t go as planned. And many many people are on this very same tumultuous rollercoaster.”
She concluded, adding that perhaps sharing their story will make other couples going through similar experiences feel less alone.
