Tom Petty was an American singer, songwriter, and actor. Additionally, he was also a multi-instrumentalist and a record producer. After leading the band Mudcrutch for certain period of time, he became the lead singer of the band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers which was formed in 1976.

Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida on October 20, 1950, Kitty (née Avery), a local tax office worker, and Earl Petty. Additionally, he also had a brother Bruce. He became interested in the world of music since his childhood years and his interest rose even more after he met Elvis Presley, the king of Rock and Roll. Throughout his early life, he became inspired by the music of Rolling Stones. He was of American nationality. Furthermore, he belonged to a mixed ethnic background of English, some Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Welsh, and distant Swiss-German.

Petty initially formed a band known as the Epics. The band later evolved into Mudcrutch. However, the band’s only song ‘Depot Street’ failed to chart. He later formed the Heartbreakers alongside Tench, Ron Blair, and Stan Lynch. The band received widespread acclaim among various fans and critics. After the commercial success of the band’s first album, they soon released their second album titled, ‘You’re Gonna Get It!’. With the Heartbreakers, Petty released 13 albums.

Additionally, Petty released three solo albums namely, ‘Full Moon Fever’, ‘Wildflowers’ and ‘Highway Companion’. Similarly, with the Traveling Wilburys, he has released two albums, ‘Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1’ and ‘Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3’. Furthermore, with Mudcrutch, he relapsed two albums.

Petty received the UCLA’s George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement in April 1996. Additionally, in 1999, his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York. In February 2017, he was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year. Petty died on January 19, 2018, from an accidental overdose of prescription pain medication.
