Geldof was born in Dún Laoghaire, the Republic of Ireland on October 5, 1951, as Robert Frederick Xenon Geldof to parents Robert and Evelyn Geldof.

He became interested in the world of music since his childhood years. He is of Irish nationality. Furthermore, he belongs to a mixed ethnic background of Belgian (Flemish and Walloon), Ashkenazi Jewish, and Irish.

Geldof initially worked in Canada as a pop journalist before returning home in 1975 to form the successful punk-rock group the Boomtown Rats.  The band’s 1980 album, ‘Mondo Bongo’, was a hit and became part of the infant MTV network’s video rotation. Additionally, in 1982, he starred “Pink” in the film Pink Floyd — The Wall.

Geldof left the Boomtown Rats in 1986, to launch a solo career and publish his autobiography, ‘Is That It?’, which was a UK best-seller.
