Brandon Saad began his club-level ice hockey with the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the North American Hockey League during the 2008-09 season.  In the 2009–10 season, he played within the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL).

Brandon Saad finished the season with the most goals, 12, and most points, 26. After that, he transferred to the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) for the 2010–11 season to play at the major junior level with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

At the end of the season, Brandon Saad was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round, 43rd overall at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

On October 4, 2011, the Chicago Blackhawks signed Saad to a three-year entry-level contract. He was named CHL Player of the Week for October 17 to October 23. Saad won the Stanley Cup twice with the Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.

He was also named a finalist for the 2013 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie of the year. On January 6, 2016, Saad was selected for his first All-Star Game.
