James Norton is an English actor. He is best known for roles in the British TV series Happy Valley, Grantchester, and War & Peace. For his role as ex-convict Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley, James was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2015.

James Norton: Early life, Childhood, Education

Norton was born James Geoffrey Ian Norton on 18 July 1985, in London, England, UK, to Lavinia Jane (Norman), a teacher, and Hugh Biddulph Norton, a lecturer.

Though originally from London, his family lived in Malton in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. He has a younger sister, Jessica Norton who is a doctor.

Norton attended Ampleforth College in the village of Ampleforth in North Yorkshire, where he excelled in theatre and tennis. He did work experience at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough when 15.

Starting in 2004, Norton read Theology at Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2007 with First Class Honours. He received a Fitzwilliam Travel Grant to travel to Northern India, to teach and perform for schoolchildren at 16 schools.

Norton was a member of the Marlowe Society theatre club at Cambridge, & in 2007, played Posthumus in Cymbeline for the society’s centenary. He said that he did a lot of theatre during college.

Norton then went on to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London for 3 years but left 6 months before graduation for an acting role in 2010.

Norton had a part in the film An Education in 2009. That same year, he also appeared in the short movie Kapital. In 2010, he was an original cast member of Posh at the Royal Court Theatre.

At the Crucible Theatre in 2010, Norton starred in That Face as Henry, an 18-year-old who has dropped out of school to care for his mentally disturbed and drug-dependent mother, played by Frances Barber.

In 2011, Norton starred as Captain Stanhope in the classic First World War drama Journey’s End. He then took on the role of Geoffrey in The Lion in Winter at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket.

In the 2012 period film Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, Norton played Owen, the would-be groom of a conflicted bride. That same year, he also appeared in Inspector George Gently (TV Series), Restless (TV Movie), and On This Island (Short Movie).

He appeared in the 2013 film Rush as Formula One driver Guy Edwards. In the movie Belle, he played a suitor of the title character. That same year, he also appeared in Doctor Who (TV Series), Blandings (TV Series), By Any Means (TV Series), and Death Comes to Pemberley (TV Mini-Series) as well.

Norton was acclaimed for his role as Tommy Lee Royce, the villain of the hit crime drama Happy Valley. As the first series came to its dramatic conclusion, Norton commented, “8 million people are currently wishing me dead“. He confirmed that he would be appearing in the second series of Happy Valley at the 2015 BAFTAs.

Since 2014, Norton has played crime-solving vicar Sidney Chambers in the ITV series Grantchester, based on the novels by James Runcie. Grantchester was his first starring role.

In 2014, he also appeared in the movies Northmen: A Viking Saga, Mr. Turner, The Great War: The People’s Story (TV Mini-Series documentary), Hollow (Short), and Bonobo. That same year, he also provided the voice of Cole in the video game Dragon Age: Inquisition.

In 2015 Norton played Duncan Grant in the BBC Two mini-series about the Bloomsbury Group, Life in Squares. He also played Sir Clifford Chatterley in the TV movie Lady Chatterley’s Lover and reprised his voice of Cole in the video game Dragon Age: Inquisition – Trespasser, that year.

In 2016, Norton appeared as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in the BBC miniseries War & Peace. The mini-series, a co-production with The Weinstein Company, allowed the cast to film in Russia.

Between March and May that year, he appeared in Bug. That same year, he also appeared in the episode- Nosedive of Black Mirror, The Complete Walk: Richard II (Short movie) and To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters (TV Movie).

In 2017, Norton appeared in the TV series McMafia and will be appearing in Flatliners and Hampstead.
