In 2006, he started his career as a professional football player with the Professional Football Team, Denver Broncos. In the season, he was promoted as the second quarterback of the team. Also, he replaced Jake Plummer as starting quarterback.

In his first season in NFL, he became the second-highest to earn touchdown percentage and third-highest TD-to-INT ratio in NFL since 1970 as a rookie. Under the team, he played for three seasons up to 2008.

In 2009, he was traded to Chicago Bears. In the season, he didn’t go well for the player. At Chicago Bears’ mercurial season the team lost eight games among ten. However, he ended the season with 27 touchdowns and 3,666 yards passing. Also, he had his career-worst passing rate of 76.8.

In 2011, he finished the season with 2,319 passing yards and 13 touchdowns with seven inceptions. In the following year, he had met the passing rate of 81.9 and touchdowns of 82 with the completing percentage of 59.6% that made him the all-time leader of the team.

On the 9th of March 2017, he left the team with the termination of seven years contract. In the same year, he joined the professional team, Miami Dolphins with a one-year contract that worth $10 million. While playing for the team, he suffered from the multiple ribs cracks. Despite that, he played 14 games for the team and finished 2,666 passing yards and 19 touchdowns.
