He is a son of Renee Danks (mother) and John Danks Sr (father). His brother, Jordan Danks is also a former professional baseball outfielder.

Since childhood, he was in love with baseball. Hence, he pursued the game as his career. In 2003, he completed his High School education at Round Rock High School. Also, he used to play baseball for his High School.

In his senior year of high school, he was named as the co-central Texas Player of the year. The same year, he was also drafted at the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft in the first round by the Texas Rangers.

After playing for three years for Texas Rangers, John Danks was traded to White Chicago White Sox in 2006 along with other pitchers like Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner.

In 2007, he completed the first with Sox with 5.5 ERA. The following year, the team used him in the starting rotation. The year, he mastered his lefty pitched. He finished the season with a 3.32 ERA.

The next year, he finished the season with a record of 13-11 with 3.77 ERA. In 2011, he set his career-high with 15 wins, 213 innings, and 162 strikeouts.

In December 2011, he signed a five-year contract with the team. On 25th May 2012, he stayed on the 15-day disabled list due to his left shoulder strain. On 6th August, he underwent the explore and correct issues surgery.

In 2015, he has the worst season of his career with 7-15 records in 30 starts. The following season, he competed with a 7.25 ERA after four starts.

In December 2016, he joined a year contract with Atlanta Braves in the minor league. However, the team released him on 20th March 2017.
