He started playing basketball professionally after being selected by the Toronto Raptors in the 1999 NBA draft. He was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Antonio Davis.

He signed a four-year contract extension worth $28.5 million with the Pacers. He has missed several matches due to his knee injuries. After playing around 78 matches till 2006, he left the team Pacers.

He also founded a non-profit Jonathan Bender Foundation in New Orleans two years after Hurricane Katrina.
