Liv Johanne Ullmann was born on 16 December 1938, in Tokyo, Japan. Her ethnicity is Jewish.

She is the daughter of Erik Viggo and Janna Erbe. Her father was a Norwegian aircraft engineer who was working in Tokyo and died due to a brain tumor four years after they moved to New York.

Her mother started working as a bookseller after the death of her father to help the family economically. They eventually returned to Norway and settled in Trondheim. She also has a sister named Janna Erika Ullmann.

Ullmann attended schools in Trondheim, Norway. In 2006, she graduated with an honorary degree in Doctor of Philosophy from Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway.
