Maura Tierney started her career by making appearances in plays. Her first significant TV role was in the 1987 romantic comedy, ‘Student Exchange’. In the following years, she appeared in ‘Dead Women in Lingerie, ‘White Sands’ (1992), and ‘Mercy’ (1995).

Maura Tierney first gained national exposure after appearing in the TV show, ‘Newsradio’ in 1995 as Lisa Miller. She portrayed Miller in 96 episodes from 1995 to 1999.

Moreover, she also appeared in the movie, ‘Primal Fear’ in 1996 and although her role was a minor one, the film received critical and box-office success. A year later, she portrayed the main character in the fantasy comedy movie, ‘Little Liar’ which was a commercially successful movie.

In 1999, Maura Tierney landed a role that would go on to define her career as a TV actress. She was cast as Dr. Abby Lockhart in the medical drama, ‘ER’, a role she played in 183 episodes until 2009. Her performance of Abby was well-received by the critics and the show won 23 Emmy Awards in over 100 nominations.

Following this, she also established herself as a popular movie actress with major roles in hit films including ‘The Thin Pink Line’ (1998), ‘Instinct’ (1999), ‘Welcome to Mooseport’ (2004), and  ‘Insomnia’ (2002).

In 2013, she joined the cast of the TV show, ‘The Affair’ as Helen Solloway. For her work in the show, in 2016, she received the Golden Globe Award. In total, she appeared in 45 episodes from 2016 to 2019.

In 2018, Maura Tierney appeared in the dark family drama film Beautiful Boy as Karen and a year later, appeared as Bernadette in the 2019 movie, ‘The Report’.

Health Problems, Accident

In 2009, aged 44, Tierney was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer. After the diagnosis, she was very afraid of chemotherapy. She recalled her experience;

“I was more afraid of the chemo than of cancer. I just thought I wouldn’t be able to live my life.”

Although there were side effects, she was able to do it and was back at work in the off-Broadway production of North Atlantic after a six-month absence.

On August 27, 2018, Maura Tierney was involved in a bike accident in Los Angeles. A car hit her bike’s back tire, which caused her to fall to the ground. Tierney was transported in an ambulance to a hospital after being placed in a neck brace and put on a stretcher. She was discharged without any major injuries.
