She was very young when her parents separated and later divorced in 1990. She has five half-siblings. They are stage director Edward Hall, producer Christopher Hall, actresses Jennifer Caron Hall and Emma Hall, and set designer Lucy Hall.

Rebecca went to Cumnor House School, East Sussex from the age of 9 to 13. Later, she went to Roedean School in Brighton, England.

Rebecca Hall studied English Literature at St. Catharine College (University of Cambridge), but she dropped out of the University, just before her final year. While at college, she was active in the student theatre scene and also set up her own theatre company.
