Rob Lowe recently reflected on a brief romance he had with Demi Moore during their early careers in Hollywood. The two actors starred together in the 1985 hit film St. Elmo’s Fire.
This week, Lowe appeared on Kelly Ripa‘s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, where he discussed their chemistry and past relationship.
The conversation started when Ripa asked if the cast, which included other stars like Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Andrew McCarthy, dated each other as she was curious about the dynamics on set.
She questioned,
“Did you have a crush on her? Did you guys ever date? Did you all date each other? Was it like, just — was it a big romp?”
In a light-hearted manner, Lowe joked in response and said,
“Big, big sex orgy on the set of St. Elmo’s Fire, I mean, Demi and I briefly, I’m not telling tales out of school, we briefly had a thing,”
He then mentioned that their fling occurred before Moore became engaged to Emilio Estevez, who she dated in the mid-1980s. Their engagement ended in late 1986. He then added,
“Look, anytime you put young 20-something men and women together, hookups are inevitable,”

Despite their romantic history, Rob and Demi have maintained a friendship over the years. Moore discussed her past relationship with Lowe in her 2019 memoir, Inside Out. his reflection came after Lowe mentioned their romance in his own book, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, published in 2011.
Moore wrote about the nature of memory, particularly how it can be affected by drug use. The actress noted,

Moore also invited Lowe to her wedding with Bruce Willis in 1987. During a conversation with Kelly Ripa, Lowe reminisced about the wedding, stating,
“We all were at her wedding to Bruce.”
The 9-1-1: Lone Star actor described it as the biggest wedding he had ever attended at that time. He noted that the event was extraordinary, mentioning that it utilized two soundstages and featured bands. He found the experience to be very enjoyable and amazing.

Rob Lowe discussed the potential for a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire during a podcast. He shared that the project is moving forward, though progress is slow as they are searching for the right writer and story.
He expressed optimism about the project, stating,
“But all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody’s excited.”
Lowe believes that the original film continues to connect with audiences because it reflects common life questions about friendships and adulthood.
He explained,
“It spoke to where we all were in our lives. Will we ever have the kind of deep friendships coming out of college and coming out of our early 20s? Will that last in our lives? And where are we headed now that we’re really adults?”
He continued,
“I think the theme of St. Elmo’s Fire today is that it’s never too late for happiness, You know, because our kids are out of school, and maybe some of us have been divorced … all the things that you deal with as you get to our ages, this is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people know and love.”
“I actually think there’s a lot to be said about why we’re doing it and I’m super excited about it. Hopefully we can pull it off.”
