On December 27, 1990, King robbed a store and threatened the Korean store owner with an iron bar, and hit him with a wooden pole.

There he stole $200 and later he was caught, convicted, and jailed for two years. After serving one year of imprisonment he was released on parole.

Later on March 3, 1991, King was caught by Los Angeles Police for a rash driving case along with his friends Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms.

King did not comply with the order of officers and refused to pull over.

This led to a massive chase of over 8 miles (13km) by police officers along with an LAPD helicopter.

He was brutally beaten and used excessive force by police officers, which led to serious fractures and injuries after he was caught.

This was filmed by amateur George Holiday who then exposed the LAPD officers on a national news channel.

Furthermore, officers were convicted and King sued the City of Los Angeles and won 3.8 million US dollars.

This brutality became a national issue that sparked the famous 1991 Los Angeles Riots. After that King became a public figure and appeared on  TV many times.

Later, he suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction.

He was then found dead on June 17, 2012, as a result of accidental drowning in the swimming pool which is caused by drug use and alcohol intoxication.
