Roger Goodell was born as Roger Stokoe Goodell on February 19, 1959, in Jamestown, New York as the third son of Charles and Jean Goodell. His family later moved to the New York City suburb of Bronxville. He was the third among the five children of his parents.

Roger attended Bronxville High School. While in school, he captained the football, basketball, and baseball team as a senior. He later graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1981. He has a degree in economics.
