Rupert Murdoch announces engagement to Ann Lesley Smith

Rupert Murdoch, who turned 92 this March, is now committed to his six-month girlfriend Ann Lesley Smith.

The media tycoon announced the engagement news in an interview on Monday, March 20, published in one of his newspapers, The New York Post.

Murdoch proposed to Ann, a former police chaplain, with an Asscher-cut diamond solitaire ring in San Francisco on St. Patrick’s Day Friday, March 17. He said in an interview that he ‘personally selected’ the engagement ring.

“I was very nervous. I dreaded falling in love — but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I’m happy.”

The 66-years old soon-to-be bride added,

“We share the same beliefs,”

The billionaire mogul continued,

“We’re both looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together,”

According to the New York Post outlet, the newly engaged couple would tie the knot in late summer 2023. The two have a 25-year age gap.

The Australia-born media magnate first married Patricia Booker in 1956. According to International Business Times, Patricia was a flight attendant before getting married to Rupert.

Also, the former couple together shared a daughter named Prudence, 65. In 1967, the two ended their marriage in divorce.

Second marriage

Of all of his marriages, Murdoch had his longest-lasting marriage to a journalist Ann Maria Torv. Shortly after the split from Patricia, he instantly connected with Ann whom he met when she was working for The Daily Telegraphy.

The two married for 32 years from 1967 to 1999. Similarly, they shared three children Elisabeth, 54, Lachlan, 51, and James, 50.

According to various outlets, Ann took around $1.7 billion in alimony from her ex-husband after their divorce.

In 1999, Rupert married Wendi Deng less than three weeks after he finalized his divorce from Anna. The duo together have two daughters named Grace, 22, and Chloe, 20.

Likewise, their marriage didn’t last and got divorced in 2013. Despite their divorce, they remain good friends and still co-parent their children together.

In 2016, Wendi called the tycoon a “good father” during an interview with The Independent. She said,

“We attend school conferences together. We both make sure they learn Chinese, do well in math. We make decisions together about how they use social media,”

In 2015, Rupert began dating former model Jerry Hall. The pair instantly connected and exchanged vows the following year in March 2016 two years after engagement.
