American actress, Sara Gilbert and Johnny Galecki were co-stars in the TV show Roseanne. Their characters on the show were in a relationship and they married. Similarly, in real life too, Sara and Johnny started a relationship. But it ended soon after.

After that, there was no news on the personal life of Sara. She kept her private life out of limelight. It was only in July 2010 that she came out and declared to the world that she was a lesbian.

In between after she separated from Johnny amicably, she was dating American actor, Toby Maguire from 1993 to 1996. Subsequently, she started a relationship with Ali Adler who is a TV producer and 18 years older to her. Ali gave birth to a son, Levi Hank in October 2004. While Sara delivered daughter Sawyer Jane in August 2007. But all this was a well-kept secret.

Sara explained about her lesbian nature in the show, The Talk. Firstly she spoke about her romance with Johnny:

“I thought he was super cute and had a total crush on him, and we started dating and he would come over and we would make out and then I would start to get depressed.”

Johnny was upset about this until Sara explained to him that she suspected that she was a lesbian.

Sara added:

“It was something people could have found out about and Johnny, like, no one knew at the show, for years, and Johnny held the secret the whole time,”
“And I just felt so scared if it came out, what could happen. Could I lose my career? Would I ever be able to play a straight role again?”

Sara disclosed that she took Johnny’s permission to talk about it on the show. He consented and supported her in her decision. He even was ready to come and hold her hand during her revelation on the show.

Sara went on to say that though she is happy and excited about life, a part of her fears the fact that she is different from others.

Sara’s current relationship

Sara and Ali were together until 2011. That year August, Sara made an announcement about their amicable separation.

After the split, Sara started dating music producer and songwriter, Linda Perry. Linda was also former frontwoman of 4 Non Blondes group. The couple engaged in April 2013. They exchanged wedding vows on 30 March 2014 in Malibu, California in an intimate ceremony in the presence of selected relatives and friends. Sara had said about the marriage:

“It feels different than you expect,”
“You feel safer in a way, and you feel like you’ve committed, and it’s not about, can I deal with this or not deal with it. Instead, it becomes, how will we deal with our relationship together.”

And on 28 February 2018, Sara gave birth to their child together, son Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry. Unfortunately, even this relationship of Sara did not last. On 27 December 2019, she filed for divorce from Linda.

After divorce, the two remain good friends and co-parent their child well. Sara had said:

“Our relationship has evolved into something else.”
