He is currently playing for the Norfolk Tides of Major League Baseball.

He was drafted by Atlanta Braves in the 28th overall selection at the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

He was educated at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California.

After that, he was selected in the 31st round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres but he opted to attend college rather than join any team.

Later he received a scholarship to play college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles baseball from Florida State University in 2009.

In 2011, he was included in All-American by Baseball magazine, Baseball America.

After performing well in his school and college baseball team, Sean Gilmartin started his professional career with Atlanta Braves and made his official debut Major League Baseball Draft in 2001.

During that period he played with many teams such as the Rome Braves, the Gwinnett Braves, the Gulf Coast League Braves and Mississippi Braves.

He became the fifth-best player in the Baseball America and got a chance to play for the Gwinnett Braves of  Class AAA International League.

On December 18, 2013, he was traded by the Braves to Minnesota Twins and also played for played the Rochester Red Wings and New Britain Rock Cats.

In 2014, he was selected by New York Mets in the Rule 5 Draft, and his debut was on April 10, 2014, against the Braves.

Later, he was designated by New York Mets in 2017 and started playing for St. Loius Cardinals till July 2, 2018.

Currently, he was playing for Baltimore Orioles since July 12, 2018.
