Last-minute health worries have made Zayn Malik cancel a concert in England.

On Tuesday, December 3, PILLOWTALK singer Zayn Malik canceled a Newcastle show just minutes before he was supposed to hit the stage as part of his Stairway to Sky Tour for his final U.K. show.

He made a short post on his Instagram Stories about his vocal health being the reason for not performing. “I’m really sorry to do this, but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight, and without that, there’s no show,” he wrote.

He continued, “I’m really sorry for letting you down, especially on such short notice…” held out hope until the very last moment. “I hope with some rest tonight to be back on stage tomorrow.

Malik signed saying, “My deepest apologies Newcastle love you all xx.”

Just before Malik was to step onto the stage at the Newcastle City Hall venue, an announcement was reportedly made to fans. “The show will no longer take place this night,” the announcement said, as per sources from Metro UK.

“We apologize for the late notice; it was [Malik’s] hope that he could continue with the show. But this is no longer possible,” the announcement continued before encouraging fans to contact their point of purchase for refunds and rescheduling updates.

The tour saw him balancing 11 stops across the U.S. and U.K. before moving to Newcastle – the final show of what was initially expected to be an 11-stop solo Stairway to the Sky Tour. Malik first began his tour on October 23.

Malik’s sweet tribute to Liam Payne

He had already postponed several shows of the U.S. tour after suffering the demise of his close friend and another former member of One Direction, Liam Payne, earlier the same month. Malik honored his late friend in Leeds during a November 23 concert shortly after Payne’s funeral.

Malik devoted his song It’s You to Payne on November 29 while performing in Wolverhampton, England, Payne’s hometown. “So I’ve been doing something at the end of the show every night and it is being dedicated to my brother Liam Payne,” he tells the audience, according to a video shared by fans.

“Rest in peace. I hope you see this. We’re in your hometown tonight – Wolverhampton,” Malik said. “This is for you, Liam. Here’s another song, ‘It’s You.'”

Payne died at the age of 31 on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Malik remained out of the spotlight for many years due to mental health and anxiety issues. His first solo performance after leaving One Direction was in May at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

He even reflected the moment in his biography book saying that he ‘‘could not function.” He said, “I found it frustrating that, even now that I was being upfront about what the issue was, some people still found reasons to doubt it. But that’s the industry.”

The British pop star also mentioned that he had anxiety since the One Direction days but it was manageable that time. He wrote in his book, “When I was in One Direction, my anxiety issues were huge but, within the safety net of the band, they were at least manageable.”

Malik added, “As a solo performer, I felt much more exposed, and the psychological stress of performing had just gotten to be too much for me to handle — at that moment, at least,”
