Cody Eakin started his career in 2004-05 with Winnipeg Monarchs Bantam AAA in WBAAA. He continued with Winnipeg Monarchs Bantam AAA for the next two seasons. Eakin played for Swift Current Broncos in WHL from 2006-07 till the season of 2010-11.

He played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League where he was twice named to the WHL (East) Second All-Star Team. Eakin started the 2011–12 season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears, but on November 1, 2011, the Washington Capitals recalled Eakin from Hershey to join the NHL parent team. On the following day, Eakin made his NHL debut within 13 minutes 19 seconds of ice time, but no points, in a game that saw the Capitals take a 5–4 overtime win over the visiting Anaheim Ducks.

Eakin’s first NHL goal was scored on November 4, 2011, against Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes. During the 2012 NHL Draft on June 22, 2012, he was traded to the Dallas Stars along with a second-round pick for Mike Ribeiro.

Eakin scored his first career NHL playoff goal on April 23, 2014, against Frederik Andersen of the Anaheim Ducks. The goal ended up being the winning goal for the Stars as they went on to win the game 4–2 and tie the series at 2–2. On December 16, 2016, Eakin was suspended for four games for charging Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. He is currently playing with the Dallas Stars.

Eakin was a member of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the 2015 World Championships, where they won the title for the first time since 2007 with a perfect 10-0 record. He also represented Canada in IIHF World U18 Championships in 2009, where the team finished in the fourth position, and in IIHF World U20 Championships in 2011, where the team won the silver medal.
