Connor McDavid began playing club hockey at the York-Simcoe Express of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). After that, he moved to the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). He was a high-level player, that’s why he was allowed to be entered in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection at age 15. He was selected first overall by the Erie Otters at the Priority Selection.

As the first overall selection, McDavid was awarded the Jack Ferguson Award. Following his 2013–14 season, he won the William Hanley Trophy and the Bobby Smith Trophy. He was also named the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year and named to the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Conner was drafted first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers of NHL. He was named the OHL Player of the Year and was named CHL Player of the Year in 2014. On July 3, 2015, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the team. He made his NHL debut on October 9, 2015, in a 3–1 loss to the St. Louis Blues. He scored his first goal four nights later against goaltender Kari Lehtonen of the Dallas Stars.

On October 5, 2016, McDavid was named the captain of the Oilers and became the youngest captain in NHL history. On November 19, 2016, he recorded his first career hat-trick in a game against the Dallas Stars. He has an annual salary of 832,500 dollars.
