Gina Gershon was born Gina L. Gershon on the 10th of June 1962 in Los Angeles, California.

Her father, Stan Gershon is a businessman, and her mother, Mickey Gershon-  Koppel is an interior designer. They are of Hebrew-Jewish ancestry.

She is the second among her two siblings.

Gina Gershon attended Woodland Hills Academy in Woodland Hills for her primary education. Prior to that, she attended Collier Street Elementary School.

In 1980, Gina Gershon graduated from  Beverly Hills High School in California. After graduation, she attended Emerson College in Boston. Later, she was transferred to New  York University in New York City. In 1983, she graduated from the University with Honors in drama and psychology/philosophy.

After completing University, she joined Square Professional Theater School, New York. In school, she worked with Director David Mamet, acting coach Harold Guskin and Sandra Seacat.

First, she appeared in the play, Camille and The Substance of Fire as an actor.
