Keith is the elder son of Marie Katherine and Theodore Olbermann.

His father is a commercial architect and his mother is a preschool teacher. He has a younger sister named Jenna Olbermann. Keith grew up in Westchester County with his family.

He became the author of the book The Major League Coaches when he was 14 years old.

As a child, Keith attended Hackley School and Farragut Middle School. After completing school education, he attended Cornell University at the age of 16 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications Arts in 1979. Keith began his journalism career at a very young age. During his school days, Olbermann began his broadcasting career as a play-by-play announcer for WHTR.
