Latto was born to Misti (nee Stephens) Pitts who was a white mother and Shayne Pitts who was a black father. In 2016 she decided to take part as a contestant on the reality series The Rap Game. From this, she was known by her stage name Miss Mulatto and also won the competition. She also got an offer from Dupri with So So Def Records but she turned them down as money was not enough.

After this, she released her first single in February 2016 that was No More Talking. Her second mixtape was released in April 2017  Latto Let Em Know. She had worked with many singers in that year like 2 Chainz, Future, Janelle Monae, and Jacob Latimore.

She then changed her name to Mulatto in 2018 and released the self-titled mixtape of the same name that year.

In January 2019, she released the song  Bitch from da Souf.  In the same year of  June, she also released her second extended play Big Latto which was preceded by Bitch from da Souf. Her single breakout reached 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2020, Latto signed a contract with RCA Records. On April 23 she released her single No Hook. That was her first promotion single later in some month she released her second promotional single He Says She Say on May 21. This year she released many singles and many kinds of music. She was also featured on G-Eazy single Down. Her song peaked at number 44 on the US Billboard 2000.

In 2021 there was an announcement that Latto was changing her name to Mulatto there was controversy over that as that term was known to be a colorist.  In the year that February Latto was named MTV’s Global Push Artist of the month.

On September 24 Latto released her lead single that was named Big Energy and it was her second studio album.
