His father was a former school principal. He grew up with four siblings named Natassia Subban, Natasha Subban, Jordan Subban, and PK Subban.

Malcolm Subban began his ice hockey career in 2009. He made his Ontario Hockey League (OHL) debut with the Belleville Bulls during the 2009–10 season. He spent the entire season with the Bulls and appeared in a total of 32 games.

Malcolm Subban was a highly ranked prospect for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and finished the season as the number one ranked goaltender in North America. After that, he was drafted 24th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2012. On February 20, 2015, Subban made his NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues.

Subban attended his first NHL training camp with the Boston Bruins ahead of the 2013–14 season. Later, he was assigned to Boston‘s American Hockey League affiliate, Providence Bruins. He was the goaltender for Team Canada in the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia.

On February 6, 2016, he was hospitalized after taking a puck to the throat during pre-game warm-ups. The organization announced Subban will miss at least 8 weeks due to this injury. With the Providence Bruins, he has an annual salary of $700,000. His net worth is unknown.
