Marianne Faithfull is an English singer-songwriter and actress. She rose to fame in the 60s with her single, As Tears Go By.

She was one of the leading female artists during the British Invasion in the US. In 2009, she received the World Lifetime Achievement Award at the Women’s World Awards.

Her father was a Major and a British intelligence officer. He was also a professor of Italian Literature at Bedford College of London University.

Her mother, Eva was the daughter of Artur Wolfgang, Ritter von Sacher-Masoch, an Austro-Hungarian nobleman. Her mother was a Ballerina during her early years.

They got divorced when she was just six and Marianne lived with her mom in Milman Road, Reading. Her childhood was not an easy one as she suffered from tuberculosis.

Marianne Faithfull started her singing career in 1964 as a folk music performer in coffeehouses. The same year, at a Rolling Stones launch party, she was discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham which changed her life.

She released the single, ‘As Tears Go By’ which became a chartbuster. The song was written and composed by Mike Jagger, Keith Richards, and Oldham.

In 1967, she started her career as an actress with her debut theatre appearance as Irina in Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’ at London’s Royal Court Theatre. The same year, she was seen in the movie, ‘I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname’ and ‘Made in the U.S.A’.

Moreover, she also did some French productions including TV films, ‘Anna’, ‘La Motocyclette’ and the 1969 film, ‘Lucifer Rising.’

Moreover, she also released a number of hit singles including ‘Summer Nights’, ‘This Little Bird’, and ‘Come and Stay with Me’. She was, however, struggling with her personal life and was homeless in the 70s.

She released ‘Dreamin My Dreams’ in 1975 and it reached No.1 on the Irish Albums Chart. Faithfull made her come back in 1979 with the album ‘Broken English’. In 1981, she released the album, ‘Dangerous Acquaintances’.

In 1985, she released ‘Rich Kid Blues’ and in 87, she released her album ‘Strange Weather’. This album was widely known as the album of the decade.

Drug Addiction and Suicide Attempt

She started smoking marijuana in 1966. She and Mike Jagger were a part of the Swinging London scene.

By 1968, she was addicted to cocaine and had miscarried a daughter. In her autobiography, she revealed she was homeless and battling heroin addiction at some point.

In May 1970, she ended her relationship with Jagger and lost custody of her son the same year. This made her attempt suicide.

Marianne lived on London’s Soho streets for a couple of years suffering from anorexia nervosa and heroin addiction. Some of her friends intervened and made her join an NHS drug program from which she could get her daily prescription from a chemist.

However, she failed at controlling her addiction. She finally got clean but had severe laryngitis and her drug abuse permanently altered her voice, leaving it cracked and lower in pitch.

She was also arrested in Norway for marijuana possession.
